The 2019 Grammys were Sunday, Feb. 10.

Fashion Favorites from the 2019 Grammy Awards AND BAFTAs

Oh what a night. I spent it on the couch, watching the Grammys, checking for BAFTA photos online, drinking beer and eating the most delicious bourbon pecan tart. Although the weekend was less than stellar (more on that another time), it was a perfect way to wrap it up.

I’ll just reiterate what I’ve said in every awards fashion-related post I’ve ever written (2019 SAG Awards here and 2019 Golden Globes here): if you’re looking for a roundup that bashes a bunch of choices, it’s not here. There were definitely a few looks that I didn’t love, but there’s more than enough places to find that kind of review on the internet. This is a place of positivity.

Without further ado, here are my top 10 pics from the Grammys.

H.E.R. is only 21. Were you this confident and self-assured at 21? Maybe you were. I, however, was not. I am in awe of H.E.R., of her look, and of her talent.

Lady Gaga in Céline

When I imagine quintessential Grammy fashion, this is it. To me, the Grammys should be shiny and a little bit messy, just like Gaga’s dress and shaggy hair. I thought she looked absolutely perfect.

(Side note: It took me like 15 minutes to type that sentence because I was starstruck by J.Lo’s Motown tribute. Did you see it?)

Ashlee Simpson in Georges Chakra Couture

I hereby deem this “the perfect jumpsuit.” That is all.

Kane Brown

So I think this is a cool look. In fact, I didn’t realize he isn’t wearing a tie until just now, making this one of the most effective tromp l’oeil looks I’ve ever seen. Although we’re seeing more men take chances with colorful suits at these events, the shirts often stay neutral. I dig this.

Hailee Steinfeld in Paule Ka (at the Spotify Best New Artist 2019 Party)

Close your eyes while I describe this dress to you. Ok, don’t do that. There’s no audio component to this. But seriously, if I told you that there was a dress that’s kind of a shiny, pinkish, vaguely-leopard-like print with puffy sleeves, a cummerbund waist and a ruffled high-low hem, wouldn’t you cringe? And yet, I think this works. Her hair and makeup keep it modern; it’s young and fun.

Michelle Obama

If you’re going to wear pants to the Grammys, it’s only natural that they should be totally sequined. I’m biased though; I just adore Michelle Obama and would probably defend her choice even if she came out wearing a potato sack.

Shawn Mendes in Paul Smith

You knew there was going to be a blue tux, right?

Alicia Keys in Custom Armani Privé

This like a cool, exquisitely tailored, dress length cardigan sweater. She crushed it as the host and I thought every look she brought was cool, but this color is my favorite on her.

Camila Cabello in Custom Armani Privé

Maybe I just like all the sparkly things for the Grammys.

Nina Dobrev in Dior

This is maybe a smidge fussier than I prefer for the Grammys, but it’s a lovely dress nonetheless.

And now, how about some from the BAFTAs? There were a few looks that were just too good not to include.

Margot Robbie

I would look like some kind of crazed bat-witch in this, but I think it’s super cool. It has enough glamour to be appropriate for the event, but the tulle makes it interesting. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything quite like this.

Claire Foy

This deep green is lovely on Claire Foy, and it’s an interesting cut and style as well. Fringe can read anywhere from old-timey Western movie to great-grandma’s window treatments. This lands somewhere in the middle, and that’s a great thing.

Regina King

Regina King wore pink to the Golden Globes too, and I’m not upset that she did it again. Also, I have major arm envy.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Style, class, grace and a freaking gorgeous dress… she has all those things.

Timothée Chalamet

I think maybe I have a thing about this guy. Not a crush-like thing; I’m pretty sure I could be his mother. There’s just something innately cool about him and the way he wears clothes. He can pull off looks that I can’t imagine would work for anyone else.

What did you think?

I thought there were some really cool looks at both shows. I also thought Alicia Keys was a fantastic host. She seemed totally comfortable and watching her play two pianos at the same time was awesome!
