Oscars 2018 Fashion Review

Ohhhhhh, how I love awards shows. I mark the dates in my calendar and give my husband advance notice so he knows that 1. he’s automatically on duty if either of the kids wakes up while the show is on and 2. I have full dibs on the tv.

I’m typing this as I watch the Oscars and although I was keeping a list of best and worst dressed, I want my blog to be a place of positivity. I absolutely have opinions and I absolutely think some people really botched their look, but I’m going to focus on my top 10 instead.

Gina Rodriguez in Zuhair Murad

No joke, I gasped when I saw Gina Rodriguez. This is stunning. Unsurprisingly, I love the color of the dress. The detailing on it feels special and the black and silver belt keeps it from feeling too saccharine.

This dress is so beautiful and interesting. So many dresses on the red carpet have the same general bones (strapless with an A-line skirt or mermaid skirt, V-neck column, etc.). This dress manages to have great flow while also incorporating structure up top in an unusual way.

Zendaya in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

I initially wasn’t quite sure what I thought of this. I think I would like it more without the long sleeve, but I still think it’s a lovely choice. When she walked, the movement of this dress was fantastic. Zendaya is so chic and I have trouble imagining anyone else pulling off this look as well as she does.

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren. She just always seems to get it right. This is flattering, modest but sexy, and the jewelry is everything.

Janet Mock

I kind of think this dress reads a smidge bridal, but also, who cares. Going to the Oscars is a pretty big damn deal, so why not wear a beautiful white dress? This is a fabulous cut on Janet and her arms are motivation for me to lift a little more.

Gal Gadot

This puts me a touch in mind of Emma Stone’s gold fringe dress from the 2017 Oscars, but it’s a fun choice all the same. She looks beautiful and the necklace (Tiffany & Co.) makes the look.

Eiza Gonzalez in Ralph Lauren Collection

Candidly, I hadn’t heard of Eiza Gonzalez before tonight. (Although I love and obsess over awards shows, I rarely watch movies.) This dress is so bright and sunny and just embodies spring. It’s gorgeous on Eiza.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

I can’t get enough of this colorful jacket (or suit) trend. This deep blue looks fantastic on Lin-Manuel Miranda. The cut of the suit is great – I’m always peeved when a man’s pants aren’t the proper length. I love the single break near his ankle.

Armie Hammer

I guess when you’re tall and built well, you can wear anything – it’s true for both women and men. I totally dig this maroon velvet tux. I also like when he wears Adidas tracksuits, which he seems to have quite an affinity for.

Common

Whoever tailors Common’s clothes does a remarkable job. I’m pretty sure he has been on my best dressed list for every single event he’s ever attended.

I’m bummed that this was the last major awards show for awhile. It’s so much fun to hang out on the couch for a few hours watching them. I usually drink some champagne and try to feel fancy in my flannel jammies. It doesn’t work but the champagne is still good.
