Girlboss Events

Hanging Out at the First Girlboss Event

On July 14, I spent the day hanging out with a group of seriously ambitious, creative and friendly women. No surprise here; IT. WAS. AWESOME.

A local business owner, Ashley Lindsey of Woodworks + Co., created Girlboss Events to give local women the opportunity to network and support each other while also building their businesses. I was immediately excited about the idea when I first discovered @girlbossevents on Instagram, and even more so when Ashley invited me to the Summer Pop-Up to cover it on Instagram.

I made a new friend while I was there—Kalyn of Sincerely, Sweet Pea. (The blog name is appropriate, as she is both sincere and sweet!) We bonded over our similar tattoos and our desire to overcome our introversion for a day! It was totally worth stepping out of our comfort zones though, as these Girlbosses were amazing.

More than 25 local ladies who are running their own businesses were there. I was able to chat with a few of them and was so impressed, not only by their business plans and ideas, but by their friendliness and desire to support the mission of Girlboss Events. The atmosphere was one of kindness, openness and community.

The event was a major success, and now applications are open for the Holiday Pop-Up! (As of this posting, I think there are only three spots left!) I am already looking forward to the next event!

First things first: The Batter Life. In most situations, I prioritize cookies above everything else. When the cookies are adorable, I become obsessed. The Batter Life is owned by Lauren Young and although it’s hard to believe, this is a part-time gig for her! She has a full-time thing going on elsewhere, but somehow has managed to develop expert-level skills without doing this 40 hours a week.

I stopped myself from buying every single cookie, but I did buy quite a few. The level of detail on these is amazing. The flamingo cookie in the middle was a paintable cookie! Have you ever heard of these? It came with white icing and the outline in black, as well as a little paintbrush and edible icing. My daughter had such a blast painting her cookie before devouring it. I am so hoping that Lauren will be at the next event.

I also met the lovely Jennifer of Togather. This is such a wonderful game idea for families. The book she wrote contains stickers with various thought-provoking questions. At the dinner table, everyone takes a sticker, and there’s your conversation for the evening!

I think this is such a creative solution to something so many parents struggle with, and I love that it pushes family conversations beyond “how was your day?” I didn’t purchase this at the event, but only because we set a monthly budget for our family and I had to make some hard choices. This is definitely on my wish list!

Everything about the event was wonderful!

Emma McMahan Photography: Emma was an absolute sweetheart and Kalyn and I were in love with her branding.

These onesies from Fresh Garden Goods are also on my wish list!
Cavu Coffee was there giving out free vanilla iced coffee. It was delicious and next time I’m up in West Chester I’ll be stopping in!

These two ladies, the owners of OBT Love and The Spampy Baby Co, make the sweetest baby goods. If you need hair bows, teethers or pacifier clips, check them out. Everything is high quality and handmade!

I wish I’d made time to speak with Emily of Wise + Wild Wellness. I snagged a photo of her setup while all the Girlbosses were taking a group photo and was so impressed with this. Emily is a doula, herbalist, reiki master and an urban homesteader. She sells balms, teas, oils and more—basically everything I’d like to incorporate into my life in a less commercialized, more authentic and natural way.

There were many more small businesses represented there that I didn’t get to interact with as much, so that’s who I’ll be checking in with next time! It was so inspiring, and amazing to realize that there were more Girlbosses to talk to than we had time for!
